Week 26 – Creative Workflow

This learning activity also marks the first of four activities that together will form Mandatory Assignment 07 – Branding and Packaging.

Learning Activity – Create a Logo

Practical assignment (observation and analysis)

Develop a name for a dog food product. Design a logo for this product, using full colour. The logo must contain a main visual and typography. (Use the “People Saving Pets” logo as a guide – this does not mean your design should be the same, it is simply an example.) Follow each of the fundamental steps outlined above, in that sequence and take note of what needs to be handed in as you progress through these steps: Exploration Use sketching techniques to draw thumbnails and hand in your thumbnails as scanned PDFs. After choosing the name “Food Bowl”, I got sort of stuck on a one-track train, because with a name like that, the most obvious choice is to somehow include a bowl in the logo. I tested out the relationship between the name and the bowl, both creating the bowl with the name somehow working around it and/or in it. You can see the initial sketches/ideas HERE Focus Highlight three of the thumbnail ideas that you consider the best options and state why. Hand in an A4 with visuals of the three chosen thumbnails; include reasons for choosing each of these three options. I thought these three ideas to be the best ones, and decided to look at all three a bit closer, before deciding on the final one to keep working on. The reasoning behind my choices: 1st – I like the way the actual product name shapes the bowl, representing the bowl both visually and literally. The food in the bowl just adds another layer to the logo, creating a more visually completed logo. 2nd – I feel like this idea is visually good, and clever. The word “food” also visually represents the food, and the word bowl is placed on the bowl. I also like the little details of the o’s in “food” representing paw prints. 3rd – I like that I played around with this idea, and once done more professionally and digitally, it could really be a good result. The o in “bowl” is also drawn as a bowl seen from above. The word “bowl” is shaped as a bowl, with the word “food” being placed inside it as a very abstract representation of being contents/food in the bowl. Construction Use sketching techniques and redraw ONE of your chosen concepts until you’ve reached a conclusion on a successful logo. Hand in your drawings as scanned PDFs. I chose to work further on a combination between the first and second, as they both had certain qualities that I felt would make for nice logo ideas. Testing Experiment more with your favourite options from Step 3 and ask the opinion of a few people. Hand in examples of the logos shown to people and write their feedback or opinion on each. I showed three different variations of the idea to friends and family, and this is what they had to say: – Spennende og annerledes – Kommer ikke på et annet ord, så det høres kanskje teit ut, men “eventyrlig” synest jeg denne logoen er – Stilig – Liker at den inneholder ord som mat, og ikke tegning av mat – Enkel og fin – Tenkte hundemat med en gang jeg så den – likte den lille detaljen med at o’en er en labb – den har det meste, likte den godt Refinement Choose your final design and execute it in Adobe Illustrator, along with the name of the product. Week 25 – Web Development Process 3: Development pt.3

Learning Activity – Market Your Website            (7 hours)

Now that you have built and tested your website, I would like you to market it. Let’s say that your budget is NOK 10 000 (or 1800 $ US). Please do the following: Do some research on what advertising costs. You could for instance contact your local newspaper, print shop and other websites. Make a detailed list of how you would market your website. Remember to keep your budget in mind. What if you had double the budget? Come up with a second marketing strategy, this time with NOK 20 000 at your disposal. (3600 $ US) Come up with a viral idea. It doesn’t have to be a video; it can be guys dancing at the airport in gorilla suits. You can use ANYTHING that is at your disposal. Be creative!

Week 24 – Web Design Process 3: Develpment pt.2

Learning Activity – Coding Basics                       (10 hours)

Take the basic website you have designed in your previous two Learning Activities in this module (Learning Activity – Put Thought Into Your Design and Learning Activity – Planning the Structure) and convert that into HTML and CSS code. This will help you understand the importance between the design and the programming phase and how they work together. Don’t stress if you can’t get everything right, just do as much as you can.

I did spend most of my week trying to catch up with everything that I’ve been behind on, so I have not been able to even come close to completing this task. I will continue working on and improving the site because it is good practice. I don’t have very much so far, but you can see the page here:
